Oh, estimates…

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Well, I got two estimates from General Contractors to build the studio. BOTH are way too high! The plans are complicated, but not THAT complicated. I’m meeting with one of them today to go over my new plan to build most of the studio myself. Some of the tasks (like electrical), I obviously won’t do myself. But I can do all the demolition, laying the subfloor and hardwood flooring, framing up most of the walls with RC, most of the drywall, painting, building the whole ceiling assembly, hanging the clouds/panels, etc. I’ll just need some framing help (for the middle wall) and someone to build the platforms. That kind of stuff.

I think we’re going to apply for permits in the next couple of days and meanwhile I’m going to start on some of the demolition (pulling up the carpet/tiles and taking down the ceiling grid). I’ll post pics soon!

If You Build It, They Will Come…But WHO Will Build It??

I’m still in search of a contractor to build the studio. The designs are done, I’m ready to order all the acoustic materials, but still don’t have an actual contractor. I’m waiting on two different General Contractors that are supposed to get me bids. One company, has not gotten back to me at all. Another company, has had four framers look at the plans and turn it down, saying it’s too complicated for them. They have another framer that looked at the space yesterday so we can get moving already. This last framer has built studios before, so, hopefully, they won’t puss out like the others did.

I did get the full list of acoustic materials we’re going to need the other day from the architect. That’s a great thing they do, since most contractors have no idea where to get “limp mass barrier” or IsoMax clips for the walls. This way, WSDG orders all the materials and has them sent right to the site. Some of the items have a lead-time of 8-10weeks, so we have to get these orders in right away.
